First, let me re-examine some fundamental principles with respect to ground fighting. The first is the need to control space. Space is your greatest ally on the ground as it will give you the opportunity to move, counter, defend, and launch an offense against your opponent. In the same sense, you must take away the space your opponent has available to avoid presenting him/her with any options. The next principle is the need to constantly move while on the ground. This becomes extremelly difficult as fatigue sets in quickly. This is why it is imperative that you randori; if for no other reason than to simply condition yourself to be mobile at all times. When you stop moving, you give up space and give your opponent precious time to apply submissions, strikes, or other techniques on you. Finally, you must be explosive and committed when going for your techniques. I show them to you in a slow, step-by-step fashion so that you are able to see and learn the proper mechanics of the principles. When applying them in real time, however, you will find that your opponent quickly catches on to danger and will be able to defend themselves from slow, uncommitted attacks.
With all that, I have some pieces of advice for the principles covered in this particular class:
The guillotine choke: Make sure you are aggressive in this choke. Do not expect your opponent to simply drive forward and fall into the technique. You must aggressively put the choke on. Also, make sure to lock in the choke before rocking back, otherwise you may aid your opponent in pulling the head out.
The juji jime: Be sure to keep your opponent close to you. Do not let off pressure with one hand until you get a secure hold with the other. Also, be subtle with the application of the choke. Make your opponent feel as if they are escaping.
The triangle choke: This is one of the most versatile principles along with juji gatame that we have for the ground. Study this well as the same mechanics apply whether you are on the bottom, the top, kneeling, or standing. This technique can be applied in all these various positions. Again, be dynamic and aggressive when capturing this choke.
I look forward to your comments and questions.
